A well-built deck extends your living space outdoors and becomes one of the most used areas of your home from spring through autumn. At Mighton Construction, we build exclusively with composite and PVC decking materials — products engineered to withstand South Georgian Bay’s demanding conditions while requiring virtually no ongoing maintenance.

Why We Build With Composite and PVC

We have seen what South Georgian Bay’s climate does to wood decks. The combination of heavy snow loads sitting on deck surfaces for months, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, intense summer UV, and moisture from lake-effect weather causes even quality wood to deteriorate rapidly. Within a few years, homeowners face splitting boards, popped fasteners, and the ongoing burden of annual staining and sealing.

Composite and PVC decking eliminates these problems. These engineered materials resist fading, staining, scratching, and moisture damage. They do not warp, split, or rot. And they never need staining, sealing, or sanding. The initial investment is higher than wood, but the total cost of ownership over the life of the deck is significantly lower.

What We Build

  • Entertaining decks — spacious platforms with integrated seating, railing-mounted lighting, and zones for dining and lounging
  • Multi-level decks — designed for sloped properties common around Blue Mountain, the Niagara Escarpment, and Georgian Bay shorelines
  • Waterfront decks — built with PVC decking for maximum moisture resistance, with consideration for conservation authority setbacks and shoreline regulations
  • Wraparound decks — extending the outdoor living experience around multiple sides of the home
  • Screened-in and covered deck areas — protection from insects and weather while maintaining an outdoor feel

Built for Our Climate

Every deck we build starts with proper footings engineered for our frost depth. We use structural framing that exceeds minimum code requirements to handle our snow loads. We detail connections and flashing to prevent water intrusion where the deck meets the house. And we follow manufacturer installation specifications precisely — because the warranty depends on it, and more importantly, so does the performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you recommend composite and PVC over pressure-treated wood?
South Georgian Bay's climate is exceptionally hard on wood decks. Heavy snow loads, freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and moisture cause pressure-treated lumber to warp, split, crack, and deteriorate within a few years. Composite and PVC decking resists these conditions, requires virtually no maintenance, and looks better for decades.
What is the difference between composite and PVC decking?
Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fibres and plastic. PVC decking is 100% synthetic with no wood content. PVC is more resistant to moisture, staining, and mould, making it ideal for waterfront properties and areas with heavy shade. PVC is typically more expensive but offers the highest durability.
How long will a composite or PVC deck last?
Quality composite and PVC decking comes with manufacturer warranties of 25–50 years. With proper installation and minimal maintenance (occasional cleaning), these decks will outlast multiple generations of wood decks.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
In most cases, yes. Decks attached to a home, elevated decks, and decks over a certain size require building permits in South Georgian Bay municipalities. We handle the permit process for every deck we build.
Can you build a deck on a sloped lot?
Yes. Many properties in the Blue Mountain and Georgian Bay shoreline areas have significant grade changes. We design and engineer elevated deck structures, multi-level decks, and stepped designs that work with the terrain rather than against it.
